GRE的写作分为issue和argument两部分,也就是立论文和驳论文。虽然写作这一部分并不要求高级词汇的运用,但在评分标准里也特别提到了用词的多样和有效性这一点。因此,掌握一词的多种表达方式确实能为文章锦上添花。
1、Issue/立论文
Issue是以正面论证为主,对论述对象的观点和主张表示支持。表示赞同或支持态度的词汇除了常见的agree, support还有以下这些表达方式:
advocate: v提倡,支持
【例】He has paid respectful attention to the home schooling movement by meeting with itsadvocatesand endorsing their cause.
back: v 支持
【例】Shebackedher argument with written evidence.
champion: v 支持
【例】She is a lawyer whochampionschildren's rights.
endorse: v 支持,背书
【例】The city's Planning Commission voted toendorsethe plan in December.
patronize: v 支持,保护,赞助
【例】The governmentpatronizedseveral local artists.
plump for: 1.支持某人/某事 2. 认真考虑后选择
【例】The Presidentplumped forthe incumbent candidate in the election.
approve of:赞成,同意
【例】we don'tapprove ofpeople who stand in the "12 items or less" lane with 13 items.
stand by: 坚定的支持
【例】No matter how much people object, I willstand bymy decision.
in favor of: 支持
【例】Everyone I’ve talked to isin favor ofthe new dress code, so hopefully management will endorse it.
2、Argument/驳论文
Argument以反驳为主,先找漏洞,进而提出观点进行论证。表示不赞同或反对态度的词汇除了常见的disagree, against之外还有:
protest: v. 反对,抗议
【例】This and the knock-on impact on power prices are prompting businesses to shutter production and citizens toprotestin the street.
disapprove:v.不赞成,反对
【例】She married him even though her parentsdisapproved.
differ: v. 不同意,反对,不同于
【例】I beg todifferwith your interpretation.
dissent: v. 不同意 n. 异议,不同意见

diverge: v. 意见分歧
【例】However, the two womendivergein their approach to family life — likely a reflection of their generational differences and backgrounds.
take exception: 对…提出异议,反对
【例】Many physicists who read this book willtake exceptionto Capra's views on contemporary physics.
take issue: 唱反调,反对
【例】Shetook issuewith the conclusions reached by the study.
beg to differ: 有礼貌地表达不同意某人
【例】You say that the candidates are essentially the same, but Ibeg to differ.
frown on/upon: 不赞成,不许
【例】The administrationfrowns onlate submissions of the required forms.
