Section 3
1. Physicists rejected the innovative experimental technique because, although it _____ some problems, it also produced new _____.
(A) clarified.. data
(B) eased.. interpretations
(C) resolved.. complications
(D) caused.. hypotheses
(E) revealed.. inconsistencies
2. During a period of protracted illness, the sick can become infirm, ______ both the strength to work and many of the specific skills they once possessed.
(A) regaining
(B) denying
(C) pursuing
(D) insuring
(E) losing
(Not physically or mentally strong, especially through age or illness:)不是不稳定的意思。
答案:E
3. The pressure of population on available resources is the key to understanding history; consequently, any historical writing that takes no cognizance of ____ facts is _____ flawed.
(A) demographic.. intrinsically
(B) ecological.. marginally
(C) cultural.. substantively
(D) psychological.. philosophically
(E) political.. demonstratively
学习一个短语,take cognizance of 或者也可以说take account of, attend to sth.
Supposing you are currently an important participant in a vital endeavor, you may gain a lot by taking cognizance of what is uttered by those on the sidelines.
Filling in the blank with the four words
1. But in any case, it is worth a very ______ amount of money to our economy - certainly in the order of a billion dollars or more.
2. Journalists try to _________ allegations with other evidence, but this isn't always possible.
3. Appearance should be balanced with content, style with ______, the medium with the message.
4. As far as possible, the essential meaning or ______ of each oath, and the formality and solemnity of the oaths, are retained.
5. Nothing has a ______ existence apart from everything else and exists only in the context of everything else.
6. Some students of the media have developed a notion of the game schema model, where tactics and strategy are now more important than ______ issues.
1. substantial 2. substantiate 3. substance 4. substance 5. substantive 6. substantive )
答案:A
4. It is puzzling to observe that Jones's novel has recently been criticized for its _____ structure, since commentators have traditionally argued that its most obvious _____ is its relentlessly rigid, indeed schematic, framework.
(A) attention to.. preoccupation
(B) speculation about.. characteristic
(C) parody of.. disparity
(D) violation of.. contradiction
(E) lack of.. flaw
parody(An imitation of the style of a particular writer, artist, or genre with deliberate exaggeration for comic effect)这个词比较高级,表示的是夸张的模仿或者恶搞。
He was relentless, some said ruthless, and it made him one of the toughest prosecutors in the state.
答案: E
5. It comes as no surprise that societies have codes of behavior; the character of the codes, on the other hand, can often be _____ .
(A) predictable
(B) unexpected
(C) admirable
(D) explicit
(E) confusing
解析: on the other hand,和前面相反, 选择B。
She is the walking example that being ‘physically challenged’ does not implicate that one cannot be successful.(这里有一个很有意思的用法,叫做walking example,类似于living proof,表示的是鲜活的证明)
Senior officials were implicated in the scandal.
答案:B
6. The characterization of historical analysis as a form of fiction is not likely to be received _____ by either historians or literary critics, who agree that history and fiction deal with _____ orders of experience.
(A) quietly.. significant
(B) enthusiastically.. shifting
(C) passively.. unusual
(D) sympathetically.. distinct
(E) contentiously.. realistic
(Showing approval of or favour towards an idea or action)
例句:
At least one newspaper has editorialized in favor of political union and others are sympathetic to the proposal.
答案:D
7. For some time now, _____ has been presumed not to exist: the cynical conviction that everybody has an angle is considered wisdom.
(A) rationality
(B) flexibility
(C) diffidence
(D) disinterestedness
(E) insincerity
